A Guide To Buying The Best Dog Training Crate

Dog Create feeling sorry

When I started researching dog crates, I was shocked by the sheer number of crates on the market. It is quite easy to get lost when shopping and to give up entirely unless you know what to look for.

There are a lot of things that go into choosing the best dog crate. You need to look at some of most popular brands like the Doskocil dog crate and find out just what makes them so popular. You also need to look at dog crate sizes including the small dog crate and the extra-large dog crate as well as everything in between.

In addition, there are factors like the material of the crate to consider. A metal dog crate will have certain advantages or disadvantages over the wood dog crate or the wire dog crate. The intended use is also important. A potty training dog crate should be approached differently than one that you are using as your dog’s “safe zone.”

Finally, if you plan on traveling with your dog, portability might be a concern. Using a soft sided dog crate or a collapsible dog crate might make perfect sense if you plan on taking it with you everywhere you go.

I have already done the research and that’s why I have been able to make the following recommendations. These are some of the best dog crates on the market and you will be making a good buying decision if you follow these recommendations.

Best Dog Training Crate Under $50

Just as there are really expensive dog crates on Amazon, with some of them incorporating smart technology and the latest materials, there are also budget options. The thing about the budget options that I have been able to find and list for you below is that they are very, very good dog crates.

In general, when you get the budget option on anything, you are pretty much settling for a poor quality product. That’s not the case with these crates at all. I think you will like the quality on these just as much as you like the price.

  • Material: Solid Metal
  • Shipping Weight: 34.9 Pounds
  • Dimensions: 48" (Length) x 29" (Width) x 32" (Height)
OxGord 24 Medium Dog Food

What I Like

My favorite thing about this crate hands down is the way that it breaks down for easy transport. You can take this crate with you anywhere and it will take up such little room that you won’t even notice it’s packed up with the rest your things.

However, I also like the way that this crate is designed with the door on the side in the door the front. This allows you to let your dog out whichever is most comfortable for him and makes it even more of a den that he can be at home in.

What I Dislike

I don’t really like the floor that comes with this dog training crate. The problem is, this seems to be made for dogs to go to the bathroom and then be easily cleaned. But that is not what a dog crate is supposed to be used for. The training crate is for them to relax in and dogs should not be eliminating in their training crate area.

The Bottom Line

This is an extremely portable dog training crate and if you want one you can take with you on vacation and will always be able to set up within seconds then you should definitely get this one.

  • Max Weight: 70 Pounds
  • Rating: 4.0
  • Material: Fabric, Steel Frame
  • Shipping Weight: 11.2 Pounds
  • Dimensions: 36 x 25 x 25 inches
Petnation Port-A-Crate E2 Indoor/Outdoor Pet Home - 36 Inch

What I Like

This brand is similar to the PetCo dog crate, which I really like. It has top quality construction for a crate made out of fabric, including the steel frame that keeps it standing upright. This review is showcasing the 36 inch crate and unless you have an exceptionally large dog this is can be perfect for him or her.

I also like the fact that they have smaller sizes that cost less money so if you have a smaller dog you can downgrade and not have to pay as much for your training crate. I also really like the look of this crate and how light it is – which would make it easy to take along on vacations or car trips.

What I Dislike

The problem that I have with this training crate has to do with the fact that the very smallest are much too small for even tiny dogs. This is a huge problem because you can always go a size up but I’m not a big fan of the fact that they think that smaller dogs can make do with such a small space.

This also isn’t going to be the most durable training crate and you’re probably not going to really use it outside much.

The Bottom Line

Still, this is a decent training crate and the price is excellent; if you get a larger size than I can recommend this.

AmazonBasics Two-Door Top-Load Pet Kennel 23 Inch

  • Sizes: 19 Inch, 23 Inch
  • Max Weight: Does not specify
  • Rating: 4.2
  • Material: Plastic w/ Wire Door
  • Shipping Weight: 4.6 Pounds
  • Dimensions: 23x15x13 inches (LxWxH)

What I Like

Even though this crate is really small and basic I like it because the top opening door comes in really handy when you want to take pets enter out that are resistant. It still has the front door and the locking mechanism is very solid and then it comes apart in the middle as well so you can clean it.

I also love the price. This is one of the most inexpensive, high-quality training crates on this list and even out on the market in general.

What I Dislike

There is one thing that I really don’t like about this training crate and that is the fact that it is too small for anything but the tiniest dog. In fact, this training crate could almost be called the Crate because it is not big enough even for smaller breeds of dogs.

Remember, dogs need to be able to turn around and stand up within their training crate. If it is too restrictive they are going to get claustrophobic and they are not going to like it. You want your training crate to be their den where they seek solace, but not at the expense of freedom.

The Bottom Line

If you are on a budget can go ahead and get this crate as long as you have a tiny dog. Both of the available sizes, in my opinion, are too small for any breed of dog but your mileage may vary.

42” Pet Wire Cage With ABS Pan

  • Max Weight: Does not specify
  • Rating: 3.9
  • Material: Wire Metal
  • Shipping Weight: 38 Pounds
  • Dimensions: 42"(L) x 27"(W) x 30"(H)

What I Like

This is basically a knockoff of the OxGord brand name training crate that was mentioned earlier. For those on a budget, I am including it here, particularly since it seems to be as good of quality as the original. It is about half the price.

What I Dislike

Once again, I don’t like the fact that this seems to be made for dogs to urinate in. That’s not what a training crate is used for and even if it were, there must be a better way to contain urine.

The Bottom Line

If you like the OxGord crate and aren’t married to the brand, then go with this one instead. The other might be a little better, but the price on this one makes it well worth the switch.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are a lot of really good training crates on the market. Some are meant to give your dog the den he needs, and some are meant to be travel crates for those on the go. Which one you choose will depend upon how you want to use it.

Best Dog Training Crate Above $50

Choosing the right dog crate sometimes requires spending a little money, but that doesn’t mean that you have to break the bank. Here I have decided to showcase several dog crates that are over $50 but are all – or nearly all – are well under $100.

*Notice: On mobile devices, scroll right to see entire table

$100 is about the standard price for a good dog crate and several hundred might be more accurate for some of the larger ones. But I have managed to find some incredible dog crates that are mostly between $50 and $100 and will work for just about any dog. Obviously, you need to make sure that the crate the dog are a good fit, but I believe you will be able to find your dog’s perfect match here.

Large Dog in a MidWest iCrate Folding Metal Dog Crate on a White Background

What I Like

I do like the fact that this crate is big enough for any dog and I like the design of it. It is a much more durable design than you usually see with wire metal cages. This one breaks down just as easily as the wire crates on the previous list but I like the fact that it has the door on the side and that it comes with an optional divider.

What I Dislike

I think that what they are recommending as the right size for certain dogs is too small. I recommend that you go larger if you are going to buy this crate. There are lots of different sizes so you should be able to.

The Bottom Line

This is a good crate and the price is excellent. I recommend it unless you find something on this list that fits you better.

  • Max Weight: Does not specify
  • Rating: 4.5
  • Material: Wire Metal
  • Shipping Weight: 26.2 Pounds
  • Dimensions: 36x23x25 inches (LxWxH)

What I Like

I love that this crate gives you so many options. That’s the problem with dog training crates is that you have to look so hard to find exactly what you want. What Amazon has done here is provide several different sizes and then give you an option on doors as well. You can customize the door, the floor and the size of the crate.

What I Dislike

Again, I’m not a big fan of the floor that comes with this crate. I also think that the wire is a little flimsy.

The Bottom Line

Still, this is really the perfect crate for someone that is on a tight budget.

Petmate Compass Kennel

What I Like

This review is going to be for the 10-20 pound range. I really love the size options that you get here. There are eight of them so you should be able to find one that fits your dog comfortably. I like the fact that it comes apart for cleaning and the door lock is pet-proof.

What I Dislike

I don’t like the color that seems to be the only option with this crate. Basically, you get the choice between black and white, or white and black. If there were more colors to choose from I’m be happier with this crate. But it’s a small thing.

The Bottom Line

Yes. It’s light, portable and very durable for a plastic crate.

Extra Large Dog Breed (Great Dane) Heavy Duty Metal Dog Crate

  • Sizes: 54 Inch

  • Rating: 4.0
  • Material: Wire Metal
  • Shipping Weight: 103.2 Pounds
  • Dimensions: 54L x 37W x 45H Inches
Extra Large Dog Cage

What I Like

This 54-inch crate is what I’m talking about when I say that larger breeds of dogs need enough room to move around in their crate. This one gives you that room, even if you have a Great Dane. I like the wire metal frame as well, as it seems to be double-reinforced for extra durability.

What I Dislike

The only problem that I have with this crate is the fact that it would be hard to comfort a dog with anxiety because there is no way to reach through the crate and pet your dog. This could be a problem for pets that have trouble traveling.

What I Dislike

If you want a really durable crate that will take a beating then this is a good choice. If you have a really large breed of dog, you are going to want to get this crate regardless because it is the only one big enough.

What I Like

I love this crate! This is the perfect size for your dog, except for the very smallest one, which is holding a Yorkie who looks cramped in the demo picture. I love the ventilation on the sides with three windows that you can open up as well as the door, and I love how lightweight and portable this crate is.

What I Dislike

The only problem that I have with this crate is the one that I have already mentioned. The small size on this is too small for any dog. The Yorkie that is in there looks very uncomfortable, but you can always go with a larger size.

The Bottom Line

If you want portable and lightweight, especially in the summertime, this is the perfect training crate.

Petmate Sky Kennel

  • Sizes: 21, 28, 32, 36, 40
  • Max Weight: 70-90, 90-135
  • Rating: 4.2
  • Material: Molded Plastic
  • Shipping Weight: 34.9 Pounds
  • Dimensions: 32 inches L X 22.5 inches W X 24 inches H

What I Like

This is another PetMate training crate and I like lots of stuff about it. You get to choose from a 15 pound dog all the way to 125 pound dog when it comes to crate size and what I really like about this one is that it doesn’t cost a fortune like the previous PetMate kennel on this list. It is half the price of the other one, about the same quality and about the same amount of room.

What I Dislike

I think the crate isn’t deep enough. I would prefer a crate that has extra room for the dog to lay out and this one seems to want to force the dog to curl up.

The Bottom Line

I would still recommend this crate. It is very high quality and it does technically have enough room for the dog sizes it shows. It might just look shallow on the picture.

  • Max Weight: Varies
  • Rating: 4.2
  • Material: Molded Plastic
  • Shipping Weight: 15.4 Pounds
  • Dimensions: 32 x 22.5 x 24 inches

What I Like

If you need a training crate to use outside for some reason, this is the one you want. There is no better training crate on this list when it comes to rust-resistance and durability.

I really love this crate because of how well constructed the wire frame is, how well put together the floor plan is and how easily things slide out, as well as the wheels that make it easy to push around. I also think that it is awesome that it has both a top door and a side door.

What I Dislike

I don’t like the fact that this crate is so expensive and it tries to upsell you on options (like set up which can easily be done yourself). But I do really like it as a product.

The Bottom Line

If you can afford it, go ahead and get it.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are plenty of training crates for your dog on the market and some of them are really high quality. I have tried to provide you with some options that I know are going to work for most people and for most dogs. Always remember, you dog probably needs more room than you think he does, and keep in mind that a crate should be a place of solace not a punishment area.
