Recently, a friend asked me about crate training – would I recommend it, what kind of crate they should get, etc. I told them that I definitely think that crate training is a good idea as long as it is done properly. It’s not for everyone, but it is a very good technique for many dogs.
Crate training your dog has many benefits. The purpose of crate training is to give your dog a place he likes to hang out where you can close the door if you need to. This is especially good for traveling. Crate training isn’t a difficult process but it does have several steps, from introducing your dog to the crate to getting him to go in on command.
The problem that some people have with crate training is that there are so many crates out there, including many different materials and building styles, and it’s really difficult to know which one to get. That’s why I have found the perfect crate and can recommend it for dogs & cats, and definitely for crate training.
If you are concerned about price, quality and how your dog will like the crate, I have the perfect one in mind. It has performed well for me and has helped me crate train two dogs.
This product comes from Midwest (the brand) and it was created to meet the needs of the consumer who wanted an affordable crate that they could easily transport and store. This crate is perfect for that and the price is absolutely amazing.
What is great about this crate is how well it works for transporting. It folds up flat so that you can have it in your trunk and take up almost no space and then you can set it up in a minute and have it ready for your dog.
It is also a very solid crate and extremely well-built. It is open and allows you to reach through and pet your dog if you need to. Here are the features of this crate:
I had great success with this crate. I bought one for my Collie and trained him on it. It was really easy to get him to use it and I credit that to the way that the doors are placed in part. It was also really light. I could easily take it to the car and set it in the back before I loaded him into it.
I was also very pleased with how quickly it folded down and set back up again. I keep it in the house because that’s where my dog is most of the time, but if I ever need it I can just remove the bedding I put down and break it down and fit it into any car.
J. Maclauchlan rated this product five stars and had the same experience I did with this crate.
It sure is a good thing I checked amazon.com for dog creates before spending almost twice as much at a major pet store! This crate is perfect in every way. It's very well made and the price can't be beat. The bottom plastic tray can be easily removed for cleaning and the crate collapses very easily.
It's pretty easy to open and close with the double sliding locking mechanism, and it comes with a partition so it can grow with your puppy. I can't imagine housetraining our now-five-month-old puppy without it! We love this create, and so does our puppy.
Update 1/2011: This crate is still standing strong and has proven itself to hold up against a strong dog, us bumping up against it, moving it, collapsing it, and cleaning it. It's perfect!
Update 10/2012: This crate is still holding up after several moves and a few dogs! It shows no signs of wear and still works perfectly. I'm pregnant and it's still very easy to use and move.
This review demonstrates all of the things that I loved about this crate. She had no problem breaking it down or setting it up and it has lasted for years. That’s why I really like this particular testimonial, because she took the time to come back and let people know that this crate lasts.
One thing that you’ll want to watch out for – some people have had a problem with a couple of the wires being cut; someone even posted pictures. But this is a rare problem and even if you do have a cut wire on your crate, it probably won’t hurt your pet. You can wrap it up with some electrical tape if that makes you feel better.
The perfect place to get this crate from is Amazon. There are other places out there that you can find it, but Amazon’s price is just incredible. You cannot even find a dog crate for under $20 (price depends upon size of course) in a pet supply store.
In addition, you want to make sure that you get a doggie bed or something with it unless you are traveling. When you crate train, you want to make the crate as comfortable as possible. If your dog sees the crate as a den, they won’t urinate there unless it is an emergency.
If you are traveling, then you can stick with the pan that comes with the crate because it prevents leaks from spreading to your car in the event your dog does eliminate.
I highly recommend this product. The price is perfect and the quality is good. I like everything about it and I have had mine for over a year. If you need a dog crate this is the one you want.
